Ukiyo-e Maze: Edo Actor Portrait
Sharaku, an ukiyo-e artist of the 18th century, lived in Edo even though his life is little known. During his ten-month career, he produced around 140 known designs between May 1794 and February 1795, mostly kabuki actors.
His portraits show a deep and intimate understanding of the character. However, his style was controversial and his talents were rediscovered in the beginning of the 20th century.
